Neelapadi was buzzing with joy and pride as the community came together to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day on August 9th! Around 50 people joined the gathering, led by the wise elders of the Boom Boom Mattukarar community. Traditional songs like Nallathangal echoed through the air, and heartfelt stories and customs were shared—captivating young and old alike.
Honouring a Proud Heritage
We began by honouring the community elders, who spoke passionately about their traditions, values, and way of life—from their roots in the hills to the iconic decorated bull that symbolized their unique livelihood. Women once sang Nallathangal as part of their daily lives, and those powerful voices came alive again during the celebration.
The elders also shared how education and employment are slowly transforming the community, while their cultural identity remains intact. Customs like marrying within the community and resolving issues through traditional leadership are still practiced with pride and purpose.
Songs, Stories & Laughter
An elderly woman’s song opened a wave of nostalgic joy, as her friends joined in, playfully teasing each other like children. Their energy was infectious! Inspired, the children performed a song about their community’s journey—carrying forward the spirit of their heritage with pride.
